10. How to prepare?

We would like to recommend the following approach to the exam preparation.

Stage 1 : Assembly of required materials.
  • Please gather all of the school textbooks for your subject area of study. You should have your own copy of these because you may need them frequently.
  • Go to MaxSkill Trainer, and print out the curriculum. You need a printed copy of this curriculum. You certainly don't want to find out that you are seeing questions in the exams that you did not know were included. You want a printed copy of the curriculum.
  • Get a copy of the MaxSkill Trainer for the specific grade and subject. Print out ALL documents that are coming with the software. This includes performance metrics, previous exams if any.
  • Ask your teacher to give you copies of previous exams.
Stage 2 : Plan development.
  • You want to make a simple plan for your exam. Success in the exam is not achieved by working very hard some days, and missing preparation for other days. Your plan should have a simple and uniform schedule.
  • Take a piece of paper and write down the schedule with exact days, start and end time which you are going to devote to prepare for the exam. For example, let us say your exam is on April 17. Let us say that you have completed Stage 1 on February 10th. So, you have 67 days for the exam. Take your previous study habits and use this as a guide to plan your future study habits. So, among the 67 days, you want to allocate your time as follows:
    Basic Study - 60%
    Weakness Removal - 25%
    Rehearsal - 15%
Basic Study - Here the steps are simple: Your goal here is to study each part of the curriculum specification with the textbook and the MaxSkill trainer.
So, the steps : Take one curriculum section. Now, go to the textbook and read all material related to it. Now, go to the MaxSkill Trainer and answer all the questions related to it. Once you find that you have answered a question incorrectly, STOP. Go to the textbook and improve your knowledge and come back to the software again. Repeat till the MaxSkill Trainer gives you a competency of at least 80%.

Weakness Removal - Most students are usually pretty good in about 60-70% of the subject matter when they complete basic study. Usually, they will find that they are not good in about 30% of the material. This can change from student to student, but most of the time, all students have some areas they are weak. So, we suggest you spend 25% of your time focusing on the weaknesses.
Weakness are of two types: Technical matter or operational. Technical - This means, you are not very good in this subject area. For example, some student might find Algebra to be difficult, others might find Geometry to be difficult. Operational - This means, you are taking too much time in answering a question, or perhaps you are not able to remember the passage when answering the questions. Technical problems can be identified from the MaxSkill Trainer and can be solved by going back to the textbook, with help from your teachers and parents and you can solve this problem. Operational problems are best solved, by taking the questions again till you get your time under control.

Rehearsal - We are all prone to forget our material. So, we suggest you to spend the last 15% of the time just reviewing all the material, instead of focusing on just one or two areas. So, when you go to the exam, you should feel that you have recently read almost all the subjects.
Stage 3 : Plan Execution
Now that you have made a plan, we are now in the execution stage. Here the usual problems are:
  • Missing the schedule: using the help of a calendar and recording each date you studied best solves this. Also, you can run a report on the MaxSkill Trainer that shows your regularity. It can show you when you logged in, how many questions you answered and your competency on each session.
  • In attention during the study period, please remove all forms of distractions away. Examples are: Video Games, TV, Play, Internet surfing, instant messaging, Movies etc. It is crucial to focus all energies on one task. Please keep in mind that your competitor is focusing all her/his time exclusively and you would want to do the same if you want to succeed.
Stage 4 : Pre Exam Preparation
  • Before exam, please take good rest.
  • Have a good breakfast and dinner the day before.
  • Take several pencils, pen and approved calculator. Check with your school for this.
  • If you follow the stages above, you will be able to get more than sixty percentage in the final exam.

We at MaxSkill wish you the best in your exam. If you have suggestions/ideas to improve this preparation steps, email us and we will review and add them in the plan above.
